Totally lovin the Netflix
So a month or so ago, I did a post on my Netflix package that I found, where for $8.99 you get discs one at a time and have unlimited streaming of select movies and tv shows online.
So, what have I watched? I’m big into documentaries, I’ve watched some trashy movies, and got hooked on a few TV shows.
The last movie I watched was a documentary called “Kicking It”.
“Filmmaker Susan Koch’s touching documentary follows six homeless soccer players battling poverty and addiction as they prepare to compete in the Fourth Annual Homeless World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa. Hailing from places as far reaching as Afghanistan, Kenya, Ireland, Spain, Russia and North Carolina, 500 dispossessed athletes use the level playing field of competitive sports to regain their dignity and transform their lives.”
I actually really enjoyed this film because in many ways it puts poverty and homelessness in a different light, allowing us to see individuals away from a “state of living” and see them really shine. If you’ve played team sports before, you know how a team environment can really give you the support and confidence that you need, and for these players, it is the exact same. More info on the Homeless World Cup, here. Such a brilliant idea.
Some other things I’ve watched and liked:
1) Heart of the Game – a captivating documentary featuring a girls high school basketball team in Seattle. USA Today article here.
2) Gunnin’ for that #1 Spot – a documentary following the top high school basketball prospects in 2006 as they travel to Harlem to play with and against eachother at the famed Rucker Park. The players include many who have just recently been drafted to the NBA including Kevin Love, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Michael Beasley. NOTE: AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON HULU.COM ! Thanks Steph for the tip!
(ok fine, so I watch a lot of documentaries)
3) DaVinci Code – I know many people say that the book is much better than the movie, like always, but not having read the book, I actually liked this movie. It wasn’t boring, but it took my dad and I two days to watch it because we kept falling asleep, me on the couch and him in his rocking chair.
………..and the new show that I’ve gotten hooked on is The Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel that follows crab fisherman as they brave the Alaskan Seas. There was a marathon this weekend which left me parked on my butt at home on the couch. Now I’ve found that they have 3 seasons that you can instantly watch on Netflix..bad news haha.
I finally got caught up on my trashy movies, none of which I actually enjoyed all that much, “Good Luck Chuck” and “My Best Friend’s Girl” and also watched “America’s Sweethearts”, which sucked.
Hit or Miss is the name of the game. The best part about streaming is that you can switch to something else if you dont like the movie.
