I hate silence — noise is my defense mechanism

If I’m counting correctly, I’ve just watched 10 episodes of Law & Order SVU: Season 10.

My roommates are gone this week to visit family so the house is pretty quiet.

It’s been a long few days at work despite being a short week, and the past two days I’ve come home not wanting to think about work or anything at all, which doesn’t prove very productive for studying or doing any reading.

If you haven’t guessed already, the way I do this is by watching videos, keeping my mind active so that it won’t drift to things that I don’t want to think about so that I can have a little stress-free time to myself.

I think I need the silence though to recharge myself. I remember  that during our Public Allies Final Retreat we did a silent exercise where we were to go sit by ourselves somewhere for a period of time (I think maybe 20 minutes) without talking to anyone or saying a word. Of course, it was much easier since we were at Pigeon Point surrounded by fresh air, birds and the ocean waves, but I feel like I should try doing this at some point back here in the East Bay.

Anyone have suggestions on how to not let your mind wander back to things that you want to escape from for awhile?
